Scottsdale.com’s Fred Mercaldo recently interviewed the General Manager of Torreon Golf Club, Joe Long. Torreon is Arizona’s top Mountain Community – a four season magical retreat location in the White Mountains. Torreon offers luxury real estate, cozy accommodations and pristine golf courses.
F Mercaldo: We have heard great reviews about the 36 holes of golf available at Torreon. Please tell us about both the “Cabin Course” and the “Tower Course”.
J Long: Both courses are excellent. Due to the fact that we are located in the White Mountains the terrain is very hilly. Tall pine trees surround the golf courses. The outlying areas of the golf course have tall fescue grass. There are many river beds that come into play when you are approaching the greens. The courses were designed by Von Hegge, Smelek and Baril. The greens are all elevated with large bunkers surrounding them.
F Mercaldo: As if great golf and cooler temperatures are not enough, golf is just the beginning of all the activities that Torreon and the White Mountains offer. Please tell us what other amenities are available at Torreon.
J Long: Torreon Golf Club offers a pool & hot tub, a fitness center, two junior golf holes, a family center with video games, pool, basketball, tennis and a catch & release fishing pond. We also have an Equestrian Center for trail rides, horse training and boarding.
F Mercaldo: Joe, Torreon is a master planned development by Desert Troon Companies. Please give us a brief history of the Company, and their vision for Torreon in Show Low.
J Long: Desert Troon Companies has a long term vision of the Torreon Golf Club community. They believe in well designed communities which are affordable and offer something for everyone with an array of neighborhood density programs. We have neighborhoods for large single dwelling homes, areas with small cottages and then duplexes for the people who want to come and go with very little maintenance. Affordability as a second home has been the underlying success of the development.
F Mercaldo: Although there are many full time residents, Torreon is mostly a second home community. With the economy struggling the past two years, and in particular the real estate segment, how has this affected Torreon?
J Long: Fortunately Torreon has done exceptionally well through these tough times. There was a small fall out of people who could not afford to keep their second home, but the majority of those homes were picked up quickly by people who have visited Torreon. The prices have dropped about 25% below the 2008 market. Currently there less than 60 homes for sale.
F Mercaldo: Joe, what are some of the accomplishments you are most proud of personally in your role in the growth and popularity of Torreon?
J Long: I feel my management team has done an excellent job in creating a warm and friendly atmosphere for our members and their guests. Torreon Golf Club is relaxing and away from the business world. We want to keep it this way. I get involved with the lady’s and men’s golfing events to help keep them affordable, fun and well attended. We have a great bar & grille where people love to hang out following their golf game.
